Switch 07: Grow Your People (Chip & Dan Heath)

People have two basic models when making decisions: The consequences model or the identity model. Consequences model is where you weigh the pros and cons, costs and benefits of your options. It’s a rational, analytical approach.

 

In the identity model, we essentially ask ourselves three questions when making an important decision:

a)      Who am I?

b)      What kind of situation is this?

c)      What would someone like me do in this situation?

Why Identity Matters?

Your identity is connected to your self-image – the way you see yourself.  Identities grow from small beginnings. The authors believe that any change effort that violates someone’s identity is likely doomed to failure, and that sometimes you need to make your change effort a matter of identity rather than a matter of consequences.

Fixed Mindset vs Growth Mindset

Next, we are introduced to the concept of fixed mindset vs growth mindset, and how these help or hinder your change effort. They say, “People with fixed mindsets believe their abilities are static or fixed. There’s little room for growth. On the other hand, people with growth mindsets believe that their abilities are like muscles. They can be built up with practice. You can make yourself better.”

Fixed mindset people are risk-averse because they fear failure. And since failure is final for them, they don’t believe they can get better at said activity, so why even bother trying? After all, you’re just a loser who can’t seem to do anything right.

Growth Mindset Is Learnable

If you want to reach your full potential, however, you need a growth mindset. A growth mindset will make you more successful at almost anything.  Growth mindset is learnable. You will struggle – you will fail – you will be knocked down. But you’ll get better as you keep trying. In the end, you will succeed. We need to start praising effort rather than natural skill. Everything is harder before it is easy. You can’t just give up because you didn’t master something at the first attempt.

To grow your people, or yourself, make sure it’s clearly understood that there is a learning curve. You’re not going to get it right the first time. Expect to face challenges and failure. Adopt the growth mindset and believe that you will get better with time. Set up the right habits to support the new behavior.
