How Much Does Luck Impact Success?

Does luck have more to do with success

than we care to admit?

I'm not gonna say I'm at my wits end, because I'm far from it.

But is it possible that luck plays a bigger role

in obtaining success than we've been led to believe?

Right now I'm struggling for money... I've had to resort to selling some of my treasures to make ends meet. Which then legitimizes the question of luck. For example, if I'd been lucky enough to be born into a wealthy family, I wouldn't struggle this much to raise money.

If I'd been lucky enough to win the lottery, or marry into a rich family, I wouldn't struggle this much.

Looking at the richest people in the world,

they didn't struggle at all

Steve Jobs (Apple)

• Family Background: Middle-class. Adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs, who were a machinist and an accountant, respectively.

• Got early investment from Mike Markkula, which allowed Apple to grow.

Bill Gates (Microsoft)

• Family Background: Upper-class. His father was a prominent lawyer, and his mother was on corporate boards, including IBM’s.

• Had early access to computers at a private school in the 1960s, which was rare.

• His mother’s connection to IBM helped Microsoft secure a major deal.

Warren Buffett (Berkshire Hathaway)

• Family Background: Upper-middle-class. His father was a stockbroker and U.S. congressman. This gave him early exposure to investing.

• Had a mentor, Benjamin Graham, one of the most influential investors ever.

Jeff Bezos (Amazon)

• Family Background: Middle-class, later upper-middle-class. His stepfather, Miguel Bezos, was an engineer at Exxon.

• Got a $250,000 investment from his parents to start Amazon.

Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX, etc.)

• Family Background: Upper-middle-class. His father was an engineer and property developer.

• Moved to the U.S. when the tech industry was booming.

See what I mean?

Now, I'm not disputing their genius, but I'm trying to show you that being born into the right families, growing up in the right environments, having access to the right networks (connections), etc. definitely puts you in the lead. While everyone else is playing catch-up and struggling to make ends meet, you are cruising along - you're spoilt for choice - you're virtually guaranteed success if you don't screw up.

And yes, there are billionaires who rose from the ashes.

I'm not saying it's impossible to get rich if you're not born rich.

but it is that much harder.

And yes, it makes for a compelling story

when you finally do succeed.

So it has its payoff 50 years down the line.

Tell me honestly, though, what would you rather have,

a good story to tell or a billion in the bank?
