The Four (4) Agreements: Run Your Own Race, Don’t Take Things Personally

People will say things about you behind your back,

especially when you stop participating in the destructive habits

that were bringing you down. Taking things personally will make you easy prey, ripe for manipulation by people trying to sow seeds

of self-doubt and negativity. People’s opinions are nothing but that.  Just opinions.  You can choose to let it affect you emotionally or you can choose to ignore it. 

As Les Brown would say,

“Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.”

Stop letting other people’s opinions of you drive how you feel

about yourself.  You shouldn’t depend on people's praise in order

to feel good about yourself.  And you shouldn't let people’s criticism

of you make you feel shitty about yourself.  Run your own race. 

Trust yourself.  Choose beliefs based on your goals and ambitions.

You can choose to believe anything,

and that includes believing in yourself.

Think positively about yourself repeatedly until you believe it. 

Follow your heart.  Make choices and take actions that please you,  actions that benefit you in the long run. 

Trust yourself to make responsible choices. 

You are never responsible for the actions of others,

you are only responsible for you.

When we don’t have enough information, about a person, circumstances, events, we tend to make assumptions. 

The danger with making assumptions is that we believe

they are the truth. We make assumptions about what others

are doing or thinking.  We take it personally – then we blame them

for our own thoughts, even though we have no idea

what the real deal is.

Truth is, asking questions is better than making assumptions. 

Questions give you clarity and allow you to tackle

the challenge directly and effectively.
